Where It All Began... Tennis Stringing in New York City

If you had told me that 30 years after I developed the concept of SAME DAY TENNIS RACQUET STRINGING for commuters on their daily visit to one of the most iconic buildings in NYC, I’d have said NO WAY!  Yet here I sit telling my story.

To say I invented the concept would be a stretch.  In 1978, I went to work for the finest man I’ve ever known.  His name was Marvin Weiss and for 13 years I managed his store named Commuter Sports Center. In December of 1991, he took me aside to share news that he had decided to close the business and retire.  I thought my world was coming to an end.  How would I ever be able to work for anyone else?  The answer was simply, I couldn’t. 

So, on January 1, 1992, I went to work to come up with an idea to start my own little shop, not a store but just a space big enough to hold a couple of tennis stringing machines for myself and my long-term co-worker, Mark Teague.  Five months later, on May 18, Grand Central Racquet Stringer was launched.

Being in the heart of one of the most traveled rail terminals isn’t a bad place to start. Rivers of commuters walked past my 200 ft. kiosk, many of whom were racquet sports enthusiasts. INSTANT SUCCESS!  AMAZING!  Of course, no success story goes without trials and tribulations…. too many to mention!  Here we stand 30 years later, stringing away for many of our decades-long customers along with many new customers that continue to seek out the finest tennis stringing services available in NYC.
